Our Story Of Love & Loss

Growing up in South Sacramento, Karega and Felicia met while in high school and attended undergrad together at Hampton University. Upon graduating from Hampton, Karega became the Dean of Students at Maya Angelou Public Charter High School and Felicia an Educational Psychology PhD student at Howard University in Washington, DC.

Karega and Felicia married in 2012 and, together, took on the work of mentoring high school students and creating pipelines for social emotional support and college access.

Relocating to East Oakland, in 2015 Karega and Felicia helped launch a performing arts social justice school named Roses in Concrete Community School and recorded their first album together with their group SOL Development. As their music took residency in the social justice and healing spaces nationally, it also led to the designing and facilitating of a project that creates healing spaces for Mothers’ who have lost children to gun violence, called BE-IMAGINATIVE.
As their experiences allowed them to grow together and shape what would become their responsibility to their community, they waited to start their family. After experiencing a radiant 41 week pregnancy in their 7th year of marriage, On September 30th, 2019, Karega and Felicia became Angel Parents to a beautiful #BabyBaileyGirl named Kamaiu SOL.

“Our precious Baby Bailey Girl was born 6:19 am, and passed shortly after birth. We were patient in awaiting her arrival and had every reason to believe that Kamaiu would be coming home with us and that we would be spending the rest of our lives with her. That’s what we planned for, that’s what we prepared for. But instead we were given the journey of Angel Parents. It is a grief that has no reference and we are still learning how to do it each day. Our bond is a multilayered love story rooted in love and service to our community.”

Our Angel Parent Identity

Our Angel Parent Identity

"You can't talk about loss without talking about love..."

We Believe Grief Is Love

Our aim is to create a grief processing reference point, documented through multidimensional storytelling for parents who have witnessed the transition of their children and the double transition of their child through the experience of neonatal loss. Although we acknowledge that grief is tremendously complex and difficult to experience, we also believe grief is sacred. Thus by honoring the stories of those experiencing grief, we have the potential to radically connect the deepest parts of our humanity. Grief gives us access to a very special part of hearts, the part of us that has the power to love what our eyes cannot see and arms cannot hold. Grief is Love and right now it is abundant.

Radical Gentleness

Our world is experiencing a collective grief like never before seen through the global experience of COVID-19. Yet, for Black people and People of Color within the margins, this grief is compounded by the loss of lives to state sanctioned violence. The grief concerning the latter is not newfound and/or unknown for Black and Brown communities. However, the lack of gentleness practiced concerning these communities’ grief is actual and felt. Contextualizing this phenomenon is necessary to understand our Angel Parent Identity and the significance of our storytelling. As newly empowered Angel Parents, we’ve found a radical tenderness and gentleness afforded us concerning our grief, unlike anything we’ve seen or experienced in our work surrounding social justice and gun violence in our communities.

Storytelling has been an intricate part of our journey in healing. Our journey has been documented through our presence on social media and can be found through the tag #LivingInTheFrequencyofLove

SOL Affirmations Podcast
Our aim is to create a grief processing reference point, documented through film and podcast for parents who have witnessed the double transition of their child through the experience of neonatal loss. Grief is complex but also incredibly sacred. We honor the stories of those experiencing grief, and doing so allows us the potential to radically connect to the deepest parts of our humanity. Grief gives us access to a very special part of hearts, the part of us that has the power to love what our eyes cannot see and arms cannot hold. Grief is Love. We frame this in context to access its power.

SOL Development

SOL Development (Source of Light), mirrors Nina Simone’s quintessential words: an artist’s duty is to reflect the times. The band offers music to illuminate today’s cultural and political climate, matching it with a sound that allows the listener to feel empowered in finding their own activism and healing.

This is the band's full length debut project, The SOL of Black Folk: Of The Dawn of Freedom. The album title pays homage on W.E.B Du Bois’ The Souls of Black Folk and specially connected to his chapter “Of the Dawn of Freedom.” The album features songs including “Helicopter,” “Source of Light,” and “Nobody”.
